Throughout history, Haiti has been through many tragic events. The event that Haiti has gone through brought the Haitian community together and has made them stronger as problems aroused. The stories that Haitian people have shared through generations are the ones that help unite all Haitians as one. Through her short story Children of the Sea, Danticat explains to us the many events that began to separate families. It all began by the cruel acts of the government which made people flee to other villages and countries, others were killed and some were accused of false crimes and condemned to jail/death.

In the beginning of the story, Danticat begins to explain how the separation of the two narrators affect each other, and how they write to each other about the problems that they are both undergoing. The girl narrator talks about the violence in her town. There is no freedom. They can’t even go outside and take a breath of “fresh air.” Her family had to flee to another town named Ville Rose to escape from the government.

The male narrator talks about a young female that’s on the boat and is pregnant. She doesn’t
__eat well__
and it seems like she will give birth anytime soon. He emphasizes on her a lot, which makes her a symbol within the story. The separation was caused by the government because the male was a __member__ of the Youth Federation Members and the government was after them to execute them. He ran off to a boat in destination to Florida leaving his beloved behind.

Violence in Haiti was so bad in these times that the soldiers would force sons and mothers to sleep with each other. Then some would be accused of unmoral charges, others were killed on the spot. Some people tried to flee and escape this misfortune but some were caught along the way and executed in front of the public to make a statement that, that’s where they live and they have to follow the rules. Whoever did not follow these rules had to deal with the consequences which included, pain, killing, raping, jail and many unthinkable cruel acts.

In conclusion the story talks about the Haitian country and how the people suffer from it’s own government. How everything has to be the way the government wants it to be, this is the reason why Haiti isn’t in very good conditions. Still today the Haitians fight for their beliefs, their lives, and the future of their people and their country.
